The 2015 North Carolina Tar Heels football team offense is loaded. Nine starters return for offensive coordinator Seth Littrell, including senior quarterback Marquise Williams. Williams is versatile in both the passing and running games. Head Coach Larry Fedora is also 0-2 in facing South Carolina. Fedora brought his Southern Mississippi team into Columbia, South Carolina and lost 41-13. Thursday’s contest should be tightly contested with North Carolina having the better offense. Williams wants to show NFL scouts he can stay in the pocket and deliver the football under pressure. The South Carolina defense will bring pressure and force the signal caller to throw errant passes. Williams will also have to get out of the pocket and make plays at times. Wide Reciever Ryan Swisher can make plays with the football in his hands both as a pass catcher and return man. Defensive Coordinator Gene Chizik has his hands full in rebuilding the defense, which was terrible in 2014. The good thing is six starters return with experience. Look for Chizik to bring pressure at times. South Carolina will test the UNC defense early and often and the can’t get caught off guard in the passing or running game.
The South Carolina Gamecocks open on Thursday for the third season in a row. The Gamecocks were beaten badly in the 2014 home opener against Texas A&M; the team looked out of position most of the game. The early season loss also prompted the “FAITHFUL” in Columbia to grumblings about “THE OLD BALL COACH”. South Carolina is 7-1 on Thursday season openers in the Steve Spurrier era. Sophomore quarterback Connor Mitch debuts under center and as alway’s Spurrier believes Mitch is the next best thing at the University. Co-defensive coordinators Jon Hoke and Lorenzo Ward have been impressed with the defense in fall camp. The emphasis will be on creating turnovers and having plenty of players around the football at all times. Spurrier is also familiar with Chizik when he was the coach at Auburn and understands his tendencies. The Gamecocks will wear helmet stickers in honor of the nine slain Chruch members in June. The UNC vs. USC rivalry should continue. It’s good for all fans in the Carolinas.
