The 2015 Detroit Lions and head coach Jim Caldwell know what they have on the offensive side of the football. The combination of quarterback Mathew Safford to Calvin Johnson is one of the most prolific in the league. Management recently restructured wideout Golden Tate’s contract to make room in the salary cap. Rookie running back Ameer Abdullah has been the talk of training camp and will see plenty of action in the opener. The Lions offense will be as good as it has ever been. The coaching staff is looking forward to seeing what the defensive line will look like without Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley. Suh left for Miami and Fairley is a member of the St.Louis Rams. Former Baltimore Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata expects to take up some of the slack. Linebacker DeAndre Levy is a team leader and slowly becoming one of the best at his position in the NFL. The Detroit defense has to get a pass rush on San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers.
The San Diego Chargers offense is just as potent as the Detroit Lions. The “BOLTS” mat have more talent in the backfield, and all eyes will be on rookie Melvin Gordon in the opener. The offense will be without All-Pro tight end Antonio Gates, who is out with an injury. Danny Woodhead, Donald Brown and Branden Oliver make up the rest of the backfield. The Chargers have added additional playmakers at the wide receiver position with Stevie Johnson and Jacoby Jones. The San Diego defense will have their work cut out. Cornerbacks Jason Verrett and Brandon Flowers will get the challenge of dealing with Calvin Johnson. Linebacker Melvin Ingram will be counted on as a pass rusher and defensive tackle Corey Liuget is turning into a dominant interior lineman. The key to a San Diego victory is to keep the Detroit offense off of the field.
