Pennsylvania native James Franklin enters his third season on the sidelines as the head coach in State College. Franklin brought his impressive resume’ to Penn State from Vanderbilt University where he took the program to new heights.

His first two seasons at Penn State has not gone as planned. Franklin had a 14-12 record and lost a great quarterback to the NFL.

The Joe Paterno era ended in one of the most scandalous incidents in NCAA history. The Jerry Sandusky situation put a black eye on the program, and it’s trying to recover.

Current Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien was Paterno’s predecessor but bolted for the NFL after just one season.

The grumblings are starting to get loud with the fan base and boosters.

The 2016-17 Penn State offense will look totally different from the three yards and a cloud of dust style the past three seasons.

New Offensive Coordinator Joe Moorhead is installing a no-huddle uptempo system. Christian Hackenberg is now competing for the job as the New York Jets starting signal caller.

Who will be under center for Penn State this season? Sophomore Trace McSorley looks like the front-runner; he’s the only quarterback coming back with experience.

Franklin insists it’s still an open competition. There is talent at the skilled positions.

Running Back. Saquon Barkley returns after gaining 1,076 with eight touchdowns last season. Wideout Chris Goodwin has the ability in the passing game.

There is a concern of the offensive line but with a new up-tempo system which will have simple blocking schemes.

How long will it take for the unit to adjust to the new style?

The Penn State defensive line is under construction. Defensive End Garrett Sickels is the only returning starter from last year’s unit which was 14th overall in the nation.

The Penn State defense gave up nearly twenty-two points per contest last season. The secondary should be the strength of the unit again this season.

The Nittany Lions gave up an average of 173.5 yards per game through the air, 8th in the BCS. Three starters return in the secondary.

Sophomore John Reid had an impressive Freshman campaign and should start at cornerback. There is also talent at the linebacker position but not a lot of depth.

However Franklin knows how to motivate a defense, and Penn State will be impressive on that side of the football.

The Nittany Lions have a favorable out of conference schedule and have a home game vs. Temple in a revenge match. They also travel to Pittsburgh, a once yearly rivalry contest which should be played every season.

Penn State gets Ohio State and Michigan State at Beaver Stadium.

Bovada.Lv list the Penn State Nittany Lions at +1,800 to win the 2016 Big Ten Conference Championship.
