Head Coach Bobby Petrino is in his second tenure on the sidelines at the “DERBY CITY” institute of higher education.

Petrino put the Louisville program on the map in his first go around in the early 2000’s. His uptempo offense got the attention of the NFL, and he jumped at the opportunity to become the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons.

He soon found out it was much tougher coaching players who made millions of dollars.

Petrino ended up at Arkansas and Western Kentucky before returning to basketball-crazed Louisville.

The defense was the calling card for the Louisville Cardinals last season with more talent on that side of the ball left by Charlie Strong.

Petrino is now in the process of recruiting his style of offensive players, and they will perform at a high-level.


The 2016-17 Louisville Cardinals offense will be under the leadership of Coordinators Lonnie Galloway and Chris Klenikas.

Sophomore signal caller Lamar Jackson over 1,800 passing yards last season is in a class by himself. The Floridian also ran for nearly 1,000 yards in the spread offense as a dual threat quarterback.

The offense struggled at times last season but is getting more comfortable in the Petrino system.

The three-headed backfield of Brandon Radcliff, Jeremy Smith, and L.J. Scott is back. Tight End Jamari Staples is as efficient in the passing game as he is blocking.

The inexperienced offensive line struggled at times last season pass blocking. The Cardinals had underclassmen and Junior College transfers in the trenches in 2015; this season will be better for the Cardinals.

Defensive Coordinator Todd Grantham has experience as both a head coach and coordinator in the College Football landscape.

The former Pittsburgh Panthers coach has four solid NFL players returning to the squad. Louisville ranked seventeenth overall in the FBS in total defense.

The strength was up front in stopping the run, allowing the opposition a little over 120.0 yards per contest.

The coaching staff has to replace Sheldon Rankins; DeAngelo Brown could be the answer and even better than Rankins.

The strength this season is at linebacker with the return of Keith Kelsey and Devonte Fields, both have NFL potential.

The secondary, led by safety Josh Harvey is strong.

The Cardinals have a soft out of conference schedule which should make them contenders in the Atlantic Division of the ACC.
