Former Ohio State Buckeyes offensive coordinator Tom Herman did a masterful job at the University of Houston in his first season as head coach.

Houston won the American Athletic Conference Championship with a 24-13 victory over AAC East Champions Temple.

The Cougars are the favorites to repeat in the 2016-17 season. Houston capped off the dramatic season with an impressive Peach Bowl victory against Florida State.

Expectations are at an all-time high at the University of Houston and a repeat of last season will improve the stock of the entire coaching staff.

Houston Cougars offensive coordinator and former Texas Longhorns signal caller Major Applewhite led the Cougars to a forty-point per game average.

Last season the Cougars offense ranked 13th in the FBS running the football. Tyler, Texas native Greg Ward Jr. Was one of two quarterbacks to throw for over 2,000 yards and rush for 1,000.

The other was Deshaun Watson of Clemson, who led his team to the BCS title game.

Ward could be one of the best in the nation under center in the upcoming season.

However his head coach is not buying the hype, Herman insists Ward must grow in a leadership role to take his game to the next level.

University of Texas transfer Duke Catalon is the favorite to replace Kenneth Farrow as the featured running back.

Herman must replace one of their best offensive lineman in Colton Freeman who had to quit football because of a neck injury. Houston has some talent at the wideout position.

The Houston Cougars defense did a fantastic job against the run, ranking in the top ten in the land.

The 2016-17 Cougars defense will be led by Todd Orlando and Craig Naivar. The defensive line returns intact and has a top recruit in Ed Oliver.

The Cougars secondary will be without 2016 NFL first round draft choice William Jackson 111. Adrian McDonald and Trevon Stewart have a knack for creating takeovers.

The duo must take up where Jackson left off last season. The coaching staff must also replace the production of Elandon Roberts, who was the heart of the team last season.

The Houston Cougars have a chance to repeat an American Athletic Conference Champions.

A late season loss at Connecticut last season keeps the Cougars from being considered as a BCS Final Four team. The coaching staff must keep this team in a passive state to complete the mission of a top ten team in the FBS.

The schedule is going to be tough with the season opener vs. Oklahoma and a matchup vs. Louisville later in the season.

Winning. NCAA Football News and Notes.
