It could be a do or die for University of Texas head football coach Charlie Strong. The former Louisville Cardinals general enters his third season on the sidelines in Austin.

The coaching staff did their best in bringing in some blue chip prep stars in the “LONE STAR STATE”.

Texas is a hotbed for talent nationwide, and the Longhorns usually get their choice of top players.

However, TCU, Oklahoma, and Baylor have risen to the level of the Longhorns. No other athletic department in the nation pours more into their football program than boosters and alumni at the University of Texas.

The Longhorns open the 2016 season at home against Notre Dame. Texas begins the month of October with Conference foes Oklahoma State and Oklahoma.

Offensive Coordinator Sterlin Gilbert was hired to get the offense on course. The Texas offense was among the worst in the FBS last season, and it has been that way since the Strong tenure.

The Longhorns offense put up an average of 145.o yards per contest throwing the football, 118th in the nation.

There is too much talent for the Texas offense to rank 93rd nationwide. Gilbert is a disciple of former Baylor head coach Art Briles.

Freshman signal-caller Shane Buechele will compete for the starting quarterback job. Jerrod Heard and Tyrone Swoopes are also in the mix for the job.

Wide Receiver John Burt (457) yards last season is the top returning pass catcher. D’Onta Foreman is a massive running back who can catch passes out of the backfield.

Bovada list the 2016-17 West Virginia Mountaineers at +650 to win the Big Twelve Championship.

The 2016-17 Texas Longhorns defense was just a pathetic as the offense in 2016 ranking 107th, allowing opponents 457.0 yards per contest.

Texas landed five top defensive tackles in the 2016 recruiting class. The opposition rushed for nearly 220.0 yards per game last season; the number must drop.

Strong insists the defensive line is a major concern. Young freshman must step in immediately and contribute in the trenches.

Sophomore linebacker Malik Jefferson is a potential All-American at the linebacker position.

Defensive Ends Charles Omenihu and Breckyn Hager will not only help against the run but must provide a pass rush.

The Texas Longhorns will again have a more than healthy secondary. Sophomore cornerbacks Davante Davis and Holton have a year of experience under their belts.

Safety DeShon Elliott is another second-year player who will contribute.

Winning. NCAA Football News and Notes.
