The Best Sports Handicapper believes the BYU Cougars are a football program on the rise.

The University of Utah is keeping the pressure on as they are now members of the PAC-Twelve.

Brigham Young University went 9-4 last season and defeated Wyoming 24-21 in the Poinsettia Bowl.

Head Coach Kalani Sitake enters his second season at the Provo, Utah institute of higher learning.

BYU lost all four games by a field, or less and defense did it in most of their wins which are unusual for the Cougars. Sitake’s new approach is different for the BYU faithful, but as long as they win, it doesn’t matter.

BYU defeated Michigan State, Arizona, and Mississippi State all of BCS power conferences.

BYU will get a test early in the 2017 season with a date with LSU in Houston, Texas.

Junior quarterback Tanner Mangum will lead the Brigham Young Cougars offense; the Taysum Hill era is over.

BYU established a strong running game last season with (201.2) yards per game on the ground.

Offensive Coordinator Ty Detmer a former Heisman Trophy winner as the quarterback of the Cougars is also in his second season.

Squally Canada and K.J. Hall will replace a 1,000-yard rusher, Jamaal Williams. Freshman Ufa Tolutau will also see action in what hopes to be a potent running game.

The loss of three productive players in the passing attack will hurt leaving senior wideout Jonah Trinnaman is the only returning receiver.

Four starters from the offensive line return to the lineup led by sophomore tackle Thomas Shoaf.

Brigham Young usually has a prolific passing attack and with Detmer calling plays look for them to put the ball in the air more in 2017.

The key to success for BYU is to have a balanced attack and avoid turnovers.

The 2017 BYU defense has talent; the Cougars gave up an average of just 19.5 points per game last season.

Defensive Coordinator Ilaisa Tuiaki is also in his second season. BYU was strong against the run in 2016, 10th nationally.

However, they were not as good against the pass allowing opponents (252.2) yards per contest.

The strength of the unit is the linebacker position led by Senior Fred Warner who can make plays all over the football field.

Francis Bernard and Butch Pau’u are also valuable at the position. The coaching staff must replace three starters on the defensive line, and it won’t be easy.

However, BYU has older College Football players due to their missionary work, and it helps make up for lack of talent.

Cornerbacks Troy Warner (Fred’s Brother), Dayan Ghanwoloku and Micah Hannemann should help the secondary with a year of experience.

BYU can make some noise if they get to the opposing quarterback and stop the pass. Bovada.Lv lists the BYU Cougars at +30,000 to win the 2017-18 BCS Championship.
