After posting winning the title in 2017 Florida Atlantic head coach Lane Kiffin is finding out the hard way how tough it is being the hunted in Conference USA. Last season the Owls took a step back finishing with a 5-7 record and missing out on a bowl. They must replace (1,348) rushing yards from NFL draft pick Devin Singletary. Alabama transfer BJ Emmons is the highest-rated recruit to play at Florida Atlantic and the staff hopes he can duplicate the success of Singletary. The Owls put up and an average of (482.2) total yards per game which ranked thirteenth in the FBS. Quarterback Chris Robison (2,540) passing yards last season returns but is in a battle for the starting job. The latest report out of Boca Raton is he’s looked the sharpest in fall camp. Tight end Harrison Bryant is one of the best in Conference-USA Wideout Willie Wright is has snagged 112 passes in two season’s while Tavaris Harrison will be the deep-threat. Upfront tackle, Brandon Walton is one of two returning starters on the offensive line. Graduation hurt the Owls last season and it could be the weak line on the offense in 2019. However, Kiffin learned a lot in the 5-7 year and will take a different approach from a phycological standpoint.
The first-year defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer has his work cut out on a unit that gave up (31.8) points per contest in 2018. The (425.4) total yards per game they allowed opponents ranked 84th in the FBS. They’ll be without linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair who’s in the San Francisco 49ers camp. Thirteen three-star recruits were signed in the offseason by Kiffin. The primary concern is in the trenches as last year the Owls gave up (186.1) yards per contest on the ground. They were totally outmanned in a 63-14 loss to Oklahoma to begin the season. In week four it was ditto as Central Florida scored fifty-six points in a twenty-point loss. Safety Da’Von Brown along with cornerback James Pierre provide stability in the secondary. Linebacker Rashard Smith looks to fill the shoes of Al-Shaair with versatile end Leighton McCarthy helping. Tackle Noah Jefferson will be called upon as the leader at defensive tackle.
Florida Atlantic gets tested off the back as they’ll travel to Ohio State in the season opener. They host Central Florida in the second week of the season which will be a test. Conference USA foes Marshall, Florida Atlantic, and Middle Tennessee will come to Boca Raton this fall.
