Losing Daniel Jones (2,674) passing yards will no doubt hurt an offense that put up (405.7) total yards per contest which ranked 66th in the BCS. The Blue Devils won just three Atlantic Coast Conference games in 2018 which concluded with an impressive 56-27 Independence Bowl victory over Temple. Quentin Harris is set to replace Jones under center and although he hasn’t developed as a passer, his ability to create with his legs is a weapon. However, head coach David Cutcliffe is an expert at developing quarterbacks. Harris reminds Cutcliffe of former Duke signal caller Thaddeus Lewis who was an NFL journeyman. Wide receiver Jake Bobo is the only experienced pass catcher but rushing attack returns leading rusher Deon Jackson (847.0) yards on the ground. Six returning offensive linemen with sixty-games of experience are back in the mix which should make Harris a bit more comfortable in the pocket.

On the other side of the football, eight starters return to a unit that allowed opponents (209.3) yards per game on the ground which was 107th in College Football. They let the opposition score (27.4) ppg which was a telling statistic; when the Blue Devils defense gave up 27 or fewer points, they went undefeated but 1-5 when allowing more than twenty-seven. Another asset for the Duke defense is the addition of cornerback Mark Gilbert who missed last season with an injury and looked good in spring practice. The defensive line returns all four starters from a year ago and has the best of both worlds with run stopper Derrick Tangelo along with pass rush specialist Victor Dimukeje. However, they have issues at linebacker with the loss of two tremendous tacklers who were smart and made plays from sideline to sideline. As the Duke football program is evolving, so is the schedule, and they’ll get tested right of the back on August 31st in Atlanta vs. Alabama. Three of their first four games are on the road which will be interesting for a first-year starting quarterback.
