A 5-7 record for the first season isn’t bad unless you coach in the Lone Star State where expectations of winning in priority. Afterall Chad Morris ed the SMU football program to a bowl berth his finals season in 2017. Sonny Dykes took over after leading a record-setting offense at the University of California, but the unit put up an average of (387.2) ppg which ranked 81st in the FBS. Expectations surrounding the offensive production is the central question the fan base has with Ben Hicks transferring to Arkansas former Texas Longhorns signal-caller Shane Buechele should be the starter. Whoever opens the season under center will have the luxury of wideout James Proche (1,199) receiving yards last season. Notre Dame transfer CJ Sanders along with former West Virginia Mountaineer player Reggie Roberson should form on the of passing attacks in the American Athletic Conference. The nations 119th ranked rushing attack was dead last in the AAC but four lineman return on an offense that gave up plenty of sacks last season and a year experience will pay dividends in 2019. The top team of College Football handicappers at Charliessports.com believes the SMU Mustangs will put plenty of points on the scoreboard this season.

Second-year defensive coordinator Kevin Kane did an admirable job on a unit that couldn’t get of the field due to an inadequate offense. By the fourth quarter, the players couldn’t breathe. The runs defense allowed opponents (199.0) yards per contest which was 98th in the nation while the (35.2) ppg given up was 110th. The Mustangs were better than average against the pass, which is a plus in a conference that features plenty of high-powered offenses. Most of the pass rushers on the edges return, but they’ll be without three of their top four cornerbacks. The safety tandem of Patrick Nelson and Rodney Clemons return, and with all the talent at the prep level with secondary players, it shouldn’t be a problem. Also, the Mustangs would outscore most of their opponents in 2019. Oddsmakers in the Reno/Lake Tahoe area know something because SMU will be FAVORITES in six games this season. They begin the 2019 season against Arkansas State, North Texas and Texas State before a trip to face TCU in Fort Worth. Bovada.Lv list the SMU Mustangs win total at 7′ games for 2019.

Prediction: SMU will go 7-5 this season.

Charliessports.com produces it for Football Betting. NCAA Football Predictions are the best in the industry and will continue through the BCS-title game in January of 2019. TCU Head Coach Gary Patterson enters his eighteenth season in Fort Worth with expectation again at a premium. The Horned Frogs have won sixteen of eighteen vs. SMU, the last loss coming in 2011, a 40-33 shootout with the Mustangs getting the ATS cover. Patterson watched his team beat up on FBC opponent Southern University in their opener while SMU goes their rear ends handed to them by North Texas 46-33 in the debut of head coach Sonny Dykes. Thursday’s contest is at 8:00 PM EST at scenic Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas, Texas. The CBS Television Network will be broadcasting. The Opening Betting Line has SMU as a twenty-two point home underdog against the point spread. The betting odds total is fifty-eight and a half points for Friday’s contest.

Other than the Red River Rivalry, when Oklahoma and Texas invade the old Cotton Bowl Friday’s contest could be the second biggest College Football matchup of 2018 in Dallas. The two schools were once members of the Southwestern Conference but went their separate way when it dissolved. As much of a splash as TCU has made over the past decade, they haven’t been as friendly to bettors going just 6-3 ATS the last nine between the teams. The Horned Frogs have also dropped their last four to the spread, but the visiting team is 4-0 to the number the previous four. TCU has a potent offense; however it’ll be nothing new to SMU as they also play in an offense-first conference. Desoto, Texas native Shawn Robinson should be licking his chops facing a defense which gave up 444 passing yards in the opener and 529 total. Paterson and his staff will not show very much with Ohio State on the horizon as Friday it’ll be another less than formidable opponent. However, the defensive secondary will get plenty of action as SMU will throw the ball. The over is 4-1 the last five times the schools have played. Bovada.Lv, list the TCU Horned Frog at +700 to win the 2018 Big-Twelve Conference Crown.

What can be said about the dismal performance of SMU? Who lost as a three and a half point road underdog. Mustang Fans watched their team get down 33-0 going into the final quarter of play missing getting the over by just three points. Dykes believes his team will perform much better against TCU and they could have got caught looking ahead. Quarterback Ben Hicks got sacked nine times, making matters worse the offensive line couldn’t open up holes making the rushing attach anemic throughout the contest. Hicks will have plenty of chances to show his arm strength as the Horned Frogs defense will stuff the run but as stated they don’t want to show Ohio State too much formation. Patterson hasn’t indicated in Public, but he’s looking ahead. This one has all the making to get ugly early which should happen, and backups will be on the field most of the second half. SMU has dropped the cover their last four following a loss. Bovada.Lv, list the SMU Mustangs at +6,500 to win the 2018 AAC Championship.

Free 2018-19 College Football Football Expert Predictions, News, Notes and Odds: SMU Mustangs Forecast

Written by College Football Expert Analyst Greg Nelson.

Charliessports.com produces it for Football Betting. NCAA Football Weekly Betting Picks are the best in the industry and will continue through the BCS Title game in January of 2019. Sonny Dykes has previously held head coaching jobs at Louisiana Tech and California-Berkley, two in Ruston, Louisiana and three in the Bay Area. Southern Methodist University hired the forty-eight-year-old Big Spring, Texas native. Dykes will implement the Air Raid offense and will demand precision passes with crips route running.

SMU finished the 2017 season with a 7-6 record which raised some eyebrows at the University of Arkansas when they announced the hiring of former Mustangs head coach Chad Morris. The Mustangs have an advantage in scheduling with American Football Conference West Division elite’s Navy, Houston, and Memphis coming to Dallas this season.

Quarterback Ben Hicks threw for 3,569 yards but will be without wideouts Courtland Sutton, and Trey Quinn both had over 1,000 yards each is receiving yards in 2017. First-year offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee insists Hicks must make better decisions under pressure. However, Dykes and Lashlee understand the amount of talent in the Lone Star State at skill positions, especially in the Metroplex.

SMU put up an average of 37.8 points per game, twelfth nationally but the loss of experience at Wide Receiver will put Hicks in more compromising situations. Four starters return on the offensive line and are primed to open holes for Running Back Xavier Jones, 1,075 rushing yards last season. Dykes is intrigued with multi-talented Braeden West a scat back who can take it the distance on any play; he will line up at virtually everywhere on the field. If SMU executes Dykes offense the ponies will be dangerous, they will score plenty of points in 2018.

Poor tackling in space cost SMU last season of defense plenty in 2017, they were in the bottom half of the FBS in most critical categories last season. Former Northern Illinois Defensive coordinator Kevin Kane has plenty of work to do for a unit that allowed 476.7 yards per contest, one hundred and twenty-second in the land. They were equally as bad on the ground and against the run.

The loss of defensive end Justin Lawler will be felt along the line but hey have some depth in the trenches, and a push from interior lineman will help tremendously. Cornerback Jordan Wyatt led the team in interceptions last season but missed spring drill due to knee surgery. Transfers Richard Moore and Patrick Nelson will help shore up the secondary. SMU plays against some explosive offenses, and they must get off of the field on third downs, or it’s going to be a long season. Bovada.Lv list SMU at +825 to win the 2018 American Athletic Conference Football West Division title.
