Can Dana Holgorsen have the same success Kevin Sumlin and Tom Herman had in his first season?

The Houston Cougars finished last season as co-champions of the AAC, West division, but a 51-32 road loss to Houston cost them a shot at the title game vs. Central Florida. It was probably a good thing after their embarrassing 70-14 blowout defeat at the hands of Army in the Armed Forces Bowl. Major Applewhite got fired after two winning season’s, but administrators believe they have a strong local recruiting base that could prole them into national prominence. It’ll be hard for an offense that averaged (512.5) yards per game to improve but don’t tell Holgorsen. The Cougars offense ranked fifth in the FBS scoring (43.9) ppg.
Quarterback D’Eriq King (2,982) passing yards returns after missing the final two regular season games of 2018. Also in the mix is leading receiver Marquez Stevenson who had over 1,000 yards receiving. Senior running back Patrick Carr (868) rushing yards which led the team will be another weapon at King’s disposal. Three seniors with eighty-one start between them return of the offensive line for co-offensive coordinators Marquel Blackwell and Brandon Jones to work with in fall camp. It’s hard to images the Houston offense producing more than they did last season. We’ll see as the open 2019 at Oklahoma, where the TOTAL could be in the ’90s.
All American defensive tackle and first-round NFL draft choice Ed Oliver is no longer around to dominate the opposition. Although they had Oliver, the defense gave up (496.8) total yards per game which ranked 127th in College Football. First-year coordinator Joe Cauthen did a great job at Arkansas State creating havoc up front and will try to implement similar schemes at Houston. As bad as the unit was there is talent returning with end Isaiah Chambers who recorded 4′ sacks in five games while outside linebackers David Anenih and LeRoy Godfrey can run like defensive backs. They’ll have problems in the trenches with opposing offensive lines, but they’re hoping JUCO transfers and freshman can immediately produce. The Houston area plays some of the best prep football in the nation, and they’ll be able to replace three top cornerbacks for last season.
